SK Innovation to Build Battery Plant in Seosan, Accelerates Its Commitment to “Green Innovation”

- Groundbreaking ceremony for a new battery plant took place in Seosan Industrial Complex in South Chungcheong Province on 30th
- New plant to have capacity of 600MWh, or batteries for 30,000 electric vehicles, by next year
- With mass production capacity, company optimistic about winning additional deal with more global automaker
- New plant will most likely contribute to local economy and partnerships with parts manufacturers

“SK Innovation held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new battery plant in Seosan, accelerating its move toward the electric vehicle battery business.”

SK Innovation (CEO Ja-Young Koo, www.SKinnovation.com) said that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new battery plant in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province on the 30th. Taking place at the construction site in the Seosan Industrial Complex, the ceremony was joined by 500 officials and high-profile guests, including SK Senior Vice President Jae-Won Chey, SK Innovation CEO Ja-Young Koo, Minister of Knowledge and Economy Joong-Kyung Choi, Governor of South Chungcheong Province Hee-Jung Ahn and Mayor of Seosan Sang-Gon Yoo as well as senior officials representing customers and partner companies.

SK Innovation will initially build an automated mass production line with capacity of 200MWh in early next year on a 231,000㎡ site, and add another 300MWh line by the end of next year, increasing the total capacity of the company’s battery production to 600MWh -- the first line at SK Innovation Global Technology (formerly SK Energy Institute of Technology) in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon is presently churning out 100MWh.

The total capacity is equal to batteries for up to annual 30,000 purely-electric vehicles. By jumping into competition for production of electric vehicle batteries, SK Innovation is keen to become a major player in the market for batteries for electric vehicles.

SK Innovation has already been named to supply batteries for Hyundai-Kia Motors’ high-speed EV “BlueOn,” Mercedes AMG’s electric super car “SLS AMG E-CELL” and hybrid vehicle built by Mitsubishi Fuso, a subsidiary of Daimler. In addition, the company is presently seeking an additional deal with other major automaker as well.

With the completion of the battery plant in Seosan, the company will encompass R&D, components and production of batteries by establishing link with the existing SK Innovation Global Technology in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon (R&D) and lithium ion battery separator production facility in Jeungpyeong in North Chungcheong Province (components).

Especially, the company is optimistic about leading the market for EV batteries by increasing in production capacity in addition to the lithium ion battery separator technology it developed in 2005 and component technologies such as a proprietary electrode technology.

“The groundbreaking ceremony will add momentum for SK Innovation’s battery business which has already been recognized across the world,” said Jae-Won Chey, SK Senior Vice President. “Seosan battery plant will contribute to stimulating local economy by creating jobs while building mutually-beneficial partnerships with component manufacturers in the battery industry.”

“Rechargeable batteries are at the center of the government’s green growth initiative,” said Joong-Kyung Choi, Minister of Knowledge and Economy, during his congratulatory speech. “Thanks to SK Innovation’s timely investments, we expect that Korean companies including SK Innovation will become world’s No. 1 in the rechargeable battery market in around 2015, and achieve our goal of becoming one of four green car powerhouses in the world.”

SK Innovation has been leading ahead in development of future energy including Green Coal, GreenPol (eco-friendly CO2 plastic), bio-fuel, hydrogen energy and batteries for electric vehicles as well as smart grid.
