Chairman Tae-Won Chey Takes Care of Day-to-Day Operations of “Green Business”

- Chairman Chey visited SK Innovation Daedeok Global Technology Center on June 8 and 9
- Visited energy development sites in Korea after coming back from overseas sites including one in China
- His visit to battery assembly lines and Green Coal Pilot Plant indicates his commitments to R&D

Chairman of SK Group Tae-Won Chey visited sites of next generation technology development in person, taking care of day-to-day operations of “Green Businesses.”

SK Innovation (CEO Ja-Young Koo, www.SKinnovation.com) said that Chairman Chey visited SK Innovation’s Global Technology Center located in Weonchon-dong, Yuseong-gu in Daejeon for two days on June 8 and 9 to see the current status of future technology development at the company. CEO Ja-Young Koo of SK Innovation and CEO Bong-Kyun Park of SK Energy accompanied the Chairman during the visit.

As part of his global on-site management approach, Chairman Chey recently travelled to resource exploration and production sites in Brazil, Australia, Indonesia and northeast China to see SK’s efforts to secure future growth engines in person. He also made a visit to Global Technology Center of SK Innovation at Daedeok to show SK’s commitments to technology development.

Upon his arrival to Daedeok, Chairman Chey toured production line 1 churning out batteries for electric vehicles, and expressed his support for employees working at the facility. With SK gaining momentum for its battery business, including the ground breaking ceremony for a battery manufacturing plant at Seosan, South Chungcheong Province last month, Chey first visited the battery manufacturing line to see progress in R&D.

Especially, he entered the manufacturing line in smock, and was reported on latest progress in SK Innovation’s battery technologies. He also monitored battery products one by one. At the site, Chairman Chey reaffirmed his strong commitment to battery business writing a note on a message board consisting of business cards of researchers; ”Until the day when every vehicle runs on SK battery, our battery business runs nonstop.”

Chairman Chey also visited and showed keen interest in construction site for battery R&D center. SK Innovation plans to bring together battery R&D resources currently scattered in several R&D sites in the new battery R&D center. The construction for the new building will be completed by end of this year, and the company plans to incorporate component technologies such as electrodes and separators as well as other relevant technologies including BMS, cell, pack manufacturing.

Then, Chey visited the Green Coal (clean coal energy) Pilot Plant which was open in January this year, and encouraged development of technologies, asking questions such as how much CO2 emissions can be reduced and what is the latest status of technology development. .

Green coal technologies are used to develop high value-added petrochemical products out of coal. With Green Coal, low-quality coal is transformed into synthesis natural gas (SNG) during the first processing and then SNG is turned into petroleum, natural gas and petrochemical products after the second processing.

The pilot plant will evaluate the first process of green coal, and SK believes that green coal technologies will help the company to take one step closer to develop new green energy.

After the tour of the facility, Chairman Chey was briefed on future vision and strategies of technology development at SK Innovation, and had in-depth discussions on the current status and the future of vehicle batteries, GreenPol (eco friendly CO2 plastic), Green Coal (clean coal energy) and bio fuel, key areas where there have been tangible outcome in R&D.

During the discussions, Chey encouraged researchers to focus on R&D with a sense of mission that the future of SK relies on successful development of green technologies.

An official at SK Innovation says, “The fact that the top manager pays visits to multiple centers where next-generation technology is being developed, including electric car batteries and information electronic components, shows SK is taking R&D very seriously. With keen interest and full support from Chairman, we are confident that SK Innovation’s R&D will produce outstanding results,”
