SK Institute of Technology (SKIT) participated in the first international symposium held at the Korea Science and Technology Center from Jan. 17 through 20. This event was organized by the CO2 Emission Reduction and Emission Handling Technology Development Team, which is under control of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

In response to the fact that the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement to resolve global warming, took effect from February 2005, the MOST launched the “CO2 Emission Reduction and Emission Handling Technology Development Team” as one of the 21st century frontier projects, and the taskforce team organized this international symposium.

Lots of local and overseas experts were present in this event, presenting their study results regarding technologies which can help comply with the UN Climate Change Convention. Besides, an exhibition on past achievements was held on the sideline.

SKIT is the only petrochemical company participating in the symposium. It made presentations on the contact-based disintegration of heavy straight run naphtha, the Olefins absorption/separation facilities, thermal efficiency enhancement for disintegration and new DME processes. It also exhibited the achievements in energy efficiency improvement and pollution reduction, including DPF, coke generation suppressing technology at the ethylene chamber and distributed energy system technology, which received a good response from participants.

Senior vice president Seon Choi of the KCRI said that he is happy to have a chance to know better SK Corp’s R&D achievements including catalyst-based ethylene production technology, which can lead to 30% energy efficiency growth, and clean energy DME development technology. He also expressed his confidence that these technologies will contribute to improving national competitiveness and emerge as promising technologies for efficient CO2 reduction.

Senior researcher Deok-soo Park also stated that the symposium was a good opportunity to promote technical capabilities of SK and Korea to the world and to lay the groundwork for future sales.

SKIT has continuously pursued to develop technologies to prevent global warming and set a plan to conduct R&D activities in various fields in search of energy efficiency maximization.
