One-month coin donation campaign to help needy people such as the elderly living alone and the disabled

”We hope that the coins we donated could encourage our needy neighbors to get their hope back.”

A ceremony was held on the 3rd floor of the SKIT building at 4:00 pm on Jan. 26. It was aimed to deliver “Love Coins” collected by SKIT employees for the elderly living alone and the disabled.

SK Institute of Technology (SKIT) transferred the donations contributed by its 300 employees for one month to a fundraising group Community Chest of Korea (CCK) and a disabled welfare facility Pilgrim Welfare Center.

This event was spearheaded by SKIT women employees’ club “Hanwool”. The club was formulated right after SKIT was established in Daeduk, and it has been operating for 10 years.

Currently, Hanwool has 19 members. When it first started its volunteering activities, members made small amount of contributions to help Seon-yeol Ahn, 71, who lives alone without children in Munhwa-dong, Daejeon.

Meanwhile, they came to learn that Ahn was eating lunch priced at 100 won in a welfare center. Former Hanwool chairman Eun-chan Park took leadership to start the coin donation campaign to help Mr. Ahn and other needy people.

Hanwool members used their membership fees to buy 300 piggy banks and distributed them to all SKIT employees at the company cafeteria at the end of last November. For one month, quite a lot of coins were collected in those piggy banks.

The coins collected individually and by team reached 4 million won in total. Hanwool decided to donate the money to Mr. Ahn and three children suffering from intractable diseases through the CCK.

In particular, Hanwool bought a jade electric mat, blankets, winter cloths and socks for Mr. Ahn, since he lacks living commodities.

Besides, SKIT employees joined the “Chuncheon Marathon Race” at the end of last October along with employees of other SK affiliates. When they run 1km, 100 won of donation was deposited. By running 42.195Km, substantial amount of donations was collected, and 1.5 million won out of them was delivered to “Pilgrim Welfare Center”.

SKIT and the CCK took this opportunity to further their cooperation for and carry out future volunteering activities in a transparent manner.

Hanwool Chairman Jeong-suk Lee expressed her pleasure of helping those in need with her small contribution. She mentioned that the donation campaign formulated amicable atmosphere across company, and the club plans to support living expenses of one more senior citizen on top of Mr. Ahn.

SKIT Head Sang-hoon Park explained that SK has committed volunteering activities from last year under the concept that SK will become a company to distribute happiness to all Koreans. He also added that material aspect of reaching out to needy people is important, but since contributing time and physical labor is also valuable, SKIT will prepare a systematic volunteer program, and send more employees outside for volunteering.

Meanwhile, SK Corp launched volunteer group “SK Angle Club” last year. It has a total of 2,000 or so members in Seoul, Daejeon and Ulsan, and 200 SK Corp employees in Daeduk singed up for the club. The Daeduk members are divided into six teams and participating in different volunteering activities in an active fashion.

For instance, the volunteers are conducting culture sharing activities, where they visit orphanages to teach kids music and art, operating “Soccer Class” for orphans, changing wallpapers for poor families in poor residential area, making Braille books for the blind, cleaning streams, making Kimchi for sharing with needy neighbor and making flower roads.
