Getting popular in Japan as a pollution buster of diesel-powered vehicles

Prime Minister Award / SK Corp’s “EnCPF” (catalyzed diesel particulate filter)

“Environmental protection is one of the top priorities all industries have to consider throughout the year. Our product receiving this award was developed as a result of 10 years of research efforts, and therefore it can be said as a culmination of our researches to prevent diesel-fueled automobile pollution.”

In the awarding ceremony of the 2004 IR52 Jang Young Shil Award, SK Institute of Technology Head Sang-hoon Park made this acceptance speech about EnCPF, a catalyzed diesel particulate filter.

Environmental destruction is a common task all countries should resolve together. For the air pollution, automobiles are regarded as the biggest culprit.

The technology to reduce diesel engine-generated pollution has been pursued by advanced countries including the US and Japan and Korea in particular. Furthermore, countries around the world are running the campaign of installing pollution controlling device DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) on vehicles.

SKIT head Park said that SK Corporation (“SK Corp”) has accumulated world-class technical competence in the catalyst technology by conducting refinery and petrochemical businesses. He emphasized that the company’s will to spearhead pollution reduction and the company-level commitment served as a driving force for EnCPF development.

According to him, however, despite the fact that pollution control device development has been going on centered around large conglomerates for almost 10 years, the device has failed to be widely accepted due to low practical benefits.

DPF technology is a very complex and difficult area compared with other related industries.
Around the world, only a few companies own DPF technologies for practical application. SK Corp is the only Korean company which developed the original DPF technology and applied it to commercial products.

In the mid-90s, SK Corp finally developed DPF and it was first time in Korea. The 10-year research effort which continued from late 1980s really paid off at that time.

Since the end of 1990s, diesel and automobile’s engine performance have improved dramatically. SK Corp launched upgraded DPF in reflection of such progresses. In 2000, catalyzed particulate filter “EnCPF” was successfully developed. This SK Corp’s effort was received very well in other countries.

In 2003, SK Corp received an approval from the city of Tokyo to sell EnCPF in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, thanks to good soot reduction performance, durability, price competitiveness and easy installation, the product has expanded its market share in Japan on a gradual basis.

Domestically, EnCPF was installed on city buses as a trial campaign for two and a half years for 2002 World Cup Games. During the period, the product passed the durability test by developing no breakdown after driving over 250,000km.

In his award acceptance speech, SKIT Head Park said that SK Corp participated in the DPF pilot project organized by the Ministry of Environment in 2004, and it will carry out a full-fledged campaign to enhance proliferation of DPF this year.

Nano Catalyst Technology-applied DPF Is Successfully Commercialized

SK Corporation (“SK Corp”) was granted the Prime Minister Prize, which is the highest honor in the IR52 Jang Young Shil Awards, for EnCPF (Enhanced Catalyzed Particulate Filter). This is a catalyzed diesel particulate filter designed to remove pollution from a diesel engine by collecting emitted particulates in a ceramic filter and removing them with engine exhaust gas heat.

The catalyzing technology, a core technology of the device, is based on the SK Corp’s proprietary nano catalyzing technology. It distributes catalyst particles evenly and therefore improves catalyst activation and production costs. Materials resistant to catalyst poison were used to enhance the filter’s durability.

Compared with existing DPF products, EnCPF doesn’t require complicated control and power supply system. It stands out among similar products in terms of safety and economic viability.
