SK’s Catalyst Technology Recognized in the Global Market

SK Corporation (CEO: Heon-cheol Shin, www.skcorp.com) has taken up more than half of the world Xylene catalyst market with its proprietary product.

On March 17, SK Corp signed a supply agreement for Xylene catalyst (product name: ATA-11) and related technologies with Reliance Industries Ltd., which has the largest Xylene plant in the world, with the help of strategic partner Zeolyst. This agreement is the third agreement between Reliance and SK Corp following those signed in 2003 and 2004.

Although SK Corp is a late comer in this business, its Xylene catalyst (Transalkylation Catalyst) accounts for 50% of the international market (considering the period from 2002 to Mar. 2005). This indicates that SK Corp’s technical ability has been recognized across the world.

From 2002 to March of this year, 15 Xylene plants in the world changed the catalyst they are using for conversion into Xylene, which amounts to 500 tons in catalyst volume. 9 plants out of them chose SK Corp’s Xylene catalyst.

It means that 300 tons of SK Corp’s Xylene catalyst is being used around the world. The company explained that this situation is very much meaningful, since it has beaten major global licensors who have dominated the market so far.

SK Institute of Technology head Sang-hoon Park (senior vice president) highlighted that the catalyst supply agreement to offer catalysts and related technologies was executed because the catalyst products have good quality as well as related progress management technologies are superior. He also mentioned that Reliance Industries, which boasted the largest Transalkylation process in the world, selected SK Corp’s technologies third time, and this is a very good case example of commercializing intangible assets based on technologies, as stressed by SK Group Chairman & CEO Tae-won Chey.

He also stated that catalyst business could earn royalty income in proportion of a certain level of production volume and earn the company global reputation in relation to technology level.

Transalkylation Catalyst was developed as a result of four-your R&D efforts from 1996 through 2000. The catalyst is used in the transalkylation process where low value-added volatile elements such as C9+Aromatics are converted into basic emulsion raw material called Xylene, which can be widely used for synthetic fabrics and solvent.

ATA-11, SK Corp’s transalkylation catalyst, can enhance xylene productivity by 5% compared with conventional catalysts due to high responsiveness and can save energy since reaction is activated at low temperature as 325℃. It has a long life span such as over four years. These advantages have drawn market attention to this product. Since 2000 when it was developed, patent has been filed in 15 countries around the world including the US, Japan and Europe, and a patent was granted in four countries including Korea and the US.

Upon the completion of the catalyst development, SK Corp has conducted a test at its Ulsan plant by using 15 tons and 40 tons of ATA-11 for two processes respectively for two years. The test results were satisfactory. After using ATA-11, the company was able to increase the revenue by over 17 billion won and save operational expenses.

In 2002, a strategic partnership was formed with Zeolyst, an affiliated company of Royal Dutch Shell Group, by sealing the technology licensing agreement. Ever since, under the partnership, SK Corp has been responsible for technical support, while Zeolyst has taken responsibility for production and marketing to boost sales in the global market.
