- Contract with state-owned research institution to develop technology for China
- Joint environment technology development project with China
- Directly compete in major markets such as the US

SK Corp. will jointly development emission reduction technology with China. SK has signed research development contract with the Vehicle Emission Control Center (VECC) under National Environment Protection Agency of Chinese government in Beijing. This contract is targeted at developing emission reduction product for diesel vehicles in China, where SK will be responsible for prototype development while VECC carries out field test and performance test for diesel vehicles in operation. The National Environment Protection Agency has plans to issue certification to foreign products via performance evaluation and SK will file for national certification for the product that will be tested with VECC.

China is reviewing to distribute emission reduction equipment to improve air pollution before the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The government and VECC have launched study in foreign emission reduction technologies. Among 2.3 million registered vehicles in Beijing, 120,000 vehicles are diesel vehicles over 4 tons. Since most of diesel vehicles are mid to large size, it has serious implication on air pollution. Accordingly, China will launch an one-year study to review performance and economics of foreign emission reduction technology.

Along with this joint development in China, EPA of the US is working with National Environment Protection Agency to test emission reducer in the US. Once these tests are completed, product price, subsidy level and type of vehicles for application will be determined.

SK has been talking to VECC since November, after being selected as leading researcher in “Joint Research Project on Environment Technology between Korea and China.” SK currently has the largest market share in Korea in emission reduction technology and began development since early 1990s. It also has a track record of exported 10,000 units to Tokyo in 2003 and 2004. Accordingly to Kunjeong, Yu of DPF business team at SK, “China has unlimited potential. We well successfully complete emission reduction product development in China to build our foundation for Chinese market.”
