SK has developed olefin manufacturing process based on naphtha cracking technology together with the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT).
Accordingly, SK has signed a strategic partnership with Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), a US- based refinery and petrochemical plant engineering company, on 23rd to apply the process on Ulsan complex with ramp up scheduled for 2009.

Advanced Catalytic Olefin (ACO) technology uses catalytic cracking approach vs. conventional naphtha steam cracking to significantly reduce manufacturing cost of making olefin products, e.g., ethylene and propylene.

Furthermore, replacing naphtha crackers in Korea alone can reduce up to 1.5 million tons of CO2 emission. If this technology is used as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) the potential size will be significant.

Wansik, Kim, Head of SKIT, commented that, “ACO technology development has brought new paradigm in the history of petrochemical, given the importance of olefin in petrochemical industry. It will contribute to enhancing competitiveness of domestic petrochemical industry as well as building strong technology export platform for Korea.”
