SK Energy (CEO: Hyunchul, Shin; www.skenergy.com) made an announcement to enter optical film market and will strengthen its telecommunication materials business after successfully developing/producing LiBS (Lithium Ion Battery Separator) for first time in Korea.
SK Energy recently completed a pilot plant to produce TAC (Tri-acetyl-cellulose) film, which is the core component of LCD polarizer. TAC film is a core component to protect polarizer with 90% of volume dominated by Fuji and Konica Minolta of Japan. TAC film market with 1.2 trillion won of market size is expected to increase to 2.4 trillion won by 2010. Korean companies has enjoyed 25% market share in polarizer, a key component in polarizer, around the world but relied completely on import for TAC film.
Therefore, SK Energy’s market entry is meaningful in a sense that it diversified limited supplier base as demand increased and may also influence competitiveness of the domestic LCD panel and polarizer companies.
SK Energy investment 20 billion won to construct TAC film pilot plant in April this year and successfully completed pilot operation before this completion ceremony.
Head of SKEIT, Wansik, Kim, commented that, “TAC film for TFT-LCD is an extremely sophisticated technology where even European and the US players with source technology failed to enter. SK’s technology development was possible because we had our proprietary polymer processing technology. We will very our technology in the pilot plant before building commercial production line next year.”
SK Energy will also accelerate prism sheet development that is used to widen viewing angle in addition to TAC film. SK Energy, which has developed lithium ion battery separator for the first time in Korea, is well on its way to enhance its competitiveness in telecommunication materials as they make inroad into optical film market.
