SK Wins Lawsuit over IP with Tonen of Japan
2009/05/06

SK Energy won over an intellectual property lawsuit filed by Tonen of Japan on lithium ion battery separator (LiBS).

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of SK Energy in the lawsuit filed by Tonen, which claimed that SK violated IR rights. Tonen is a leading LiBS manufacturer in Japan, and it filed a lawsuit against SK for violating domestic IP right in March 2006 after SK became the third company in the world to develop LiBS in December 2004.

Earlier, the Seoul District Court dismissed the case filed by Tonen in January 2007, and the Seoul Appellate Court decided that SK Energy did not violate Tonen’s IP right in December last year. Winning the three years of legal battle, SK Energy is expected to gain momentum to aggressively pursue its LiBS business in the world market.

LiBS is a core component of lithium ion battery and multi perforated film of poly-olefin class which separates anode with cathode to prevent short circuits and help transmission of electrons.

In December 2004, SK became the third manufacturer in the world and first in Korea to develop LiBS. In May 2005, the company launched mass production, completing the construction of the first production line in the industrial complex in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. After building the second line in 2008, it is now working on the third line to start production in 2009. The company began to invest in construction of the fourth and the fifth line, aiming to complete construction by 2010, as it continues to accelerate its move toward LiBS.
