2009/03/26
- SK Energy and Korea Institute of Energy Research forms partnership for technology exchange
- To jointly conduct research on clean energy such as green coal energy
- Develop innovative new energy technologies to respond to future energy industry

A business organization and a government-backed research institute join hands to develop future green energy.

SK Energy said on the 25th that it had formed a technology exchange partnership with the Korea Institute of Research Energy (KIER) to jointly develop green energy for the future.

At the ceremony held at Green Building of the KIER, Park Sang-Hoon, President of Planning and Technology Division at SK Energy, and Han Moon-Hee, President of KERI, signed a memorandum of understanding to “conduct joint research on clean energy and build cooperation system to promote low-carbon green growth.”

The research project will be held as a business-research partnership broadly covering core technologies in the new & regenerative energy and green energy area including green coal and biofuel, creating a synergy in time-to-market.

SK Energy selected five priority tasks as part of its “future green growth” drive, and is accelerating development of future energy such as lithium ion batteries, CO2 polymer and emission-free coal energy. The company has become the world’s third company to commercialize a lithium ion battery separator (LiBS) technology, and continues to lead development of new energy in the private sector.

The KIER has been conducting a number of government projects in the energy area, including CO2 reduction and processing technology and high-efficiency hydrogen energy manufacturing-storing technology, as a leading government-backed research institute.

“The joint research between the country’s leading energy institute and company will accelerate research on new energy,” said Park Sang-Hoon, President of Planning and Technology Division at SK Energy. “We remain committed to making significant contributions to helping the country become an energy powerhouse in the future energy area by developing innovative technologies such as emission-free coal energy and marine bio energy”

After the signing ceremony, the two sides jointly hosted a seminar and presented their respective technologies. They also talked about future research tasks and ways to link research outcome with a business model.
