Wins Recognition for contributions to development of shock absorber oil technology

Shock absorber oil (SAO) used for vehicles is non-exchangeable lubricant used during the entire lifespan of a shock absorber (SA). And the market is presently dominated by Japanese and German makers. SK Energy has successfully developed an SAO technology with Lubricals, a company specializing in additive products.

This achievement came after Lubricals developed various types of additives using its country’s best lubricant additive manufacturing technology while SK Energy produced a prototype and conducted performance tests to ensure optimal quality for successful development

The prototype was commercially adopted after tests with Mando and Hyundai Motor, and began to be provided to S&T Daewoo in 2007. The SAO is expected to generate more than 10 billion won in annual sales by 2010, with an SAO for automakers now being developed.

SAO used for vehicles must go through stringent performance tests which vary across different automobile manufacturers. This leads to the need for customizable technology.

To address the rising demand for high-performance shock absorbers amid production of premium vehicles, SK Energy began to work on locally-produced SAO as a leader in the domestic lubricant industry.

With its established additive evaluation and formulation technology, the company was set to develop SAO. It soon realized that it could not meet the strict SAO standards with the existing additives.

To develop a new additive, it proposed a partnership to Lubricals, a company with experience in manufacturing of lubricant additives. And the two companies started joint development of what they believed as a promising product.

The two partners repeated the process in which the two companies produced an additive sample; manufactured and evaluated the SAO prototype by adopting the new sample; and developed a new additive based on feedbacks

After research work for over a decade, the two successfully developed an optimal additive and formulation technology. With the proprietary technology, they now can respond to request from any company thanks to the customizable SAO technology

SK Energy and Lubricals have grown confident about development of new technology through this win-win partnership, and are now expanding their relationship into another lubricant product.
